Activity: Building a profile of diversity in today’s schools

As a class we are looking to develop an understanding of who our students are going to be in the preK-12 classroom.

Activity 1: In your cooperative groups review the APSE Issue Brief (Sept 2012) available at http://aspe.hhs.gov/hsp/12/povertyandincomeest/ib.shtml and provide an overview/summary of the data provided.

Activity 2: Each cooperative group will be assigned two identified student diversity characteristic to research and summarize. The group report should include the group members names, the diversity characteristics being explored, and a written summary of the information found and the websites viewed.
The characteristics being explored for this part of the activity include:
a - Reading ability
b - Migrant Students
c - Family configuration / background
d - Parent’s educational background
e - Physical challenges
f - Language diversity
g - Gender
h - Academic performance
i - Students with dependency issues
j - Race / Ethnicity

Activity 3: For this part of the assignment your group is to identify two additional ways in which students can demonstrate characteristics of diversity in the classroom. Once identified, your group will develop a summary of those two additional diversity characteristics. Some ideas for this part of the activity may include:
Learning exceptionalities & special needs
Multiple intelligences
Learning styles
Gender identity
Multiculturalism
Religious beliefs
Socioeconomic status / poverty
